Description:

This is a lyrical and poetic piano trio work by Norwegian pianist/arranger Ejolf Dahle, whose beautiful sound is filled with rich shadows and depth. His abilities as a skilled pianist and arranger are well documented. Inspired by abstract and visual themes, the 10 pieces are thoughtfully assembled with melodies and harmonies that fuse Norwegian classical music, jazz, and classical music, and are performed by a transformative trio. This is a remarkable album from Edition Records, a label that has released a series of high-profile albums by Gretchen Parlato, Mark Juliana, Chris Potter, Miho Narama, and even Sachal Vasandani & Roman Colan! Norwegian pianist and arranger Ejolf Dahle has been invited to perform at many European festivals as a jazz pianist and has won many awards. His album "Wolf Valley" (2016) was nominated for the Spellemann Prize (Norway's Grammy Award), and he has become a hot presence in the Nordic and European jazz scene. In his second work, "Return To Mind" (2018), Dahle's compositions are organically harmonized in a characteristic eight-piece formation of piano trio + three winds + violin + vibraphone. The worldview of this "new chamber music" is similar to that of ECM, Minas New Generation, and Nobuyuki Nakajima, and has become a topic of conversation among Japanese connoisseurs. This is the fifth album under his own name for Edition Records, a UK label that has released a series of high-profile albums by Gretchen Parlato, Mark Juliana, Chris Potter, Miho Narama, Lionel Ruecke, and Sachal Vasandani & Roman Colan, and the title of the album is "Wayfarers. As the album title "Wayfarers" suggests, from the title track, which evokes the dazzling future of a journey that is about to begin, the process of a traveler's journey of stopping, observing, and thinking is expressed. The music, constructed from images obtained by capturing the ups and downs of each scene and emotion, is given rich shades by the trio's transformative performance, which shares the deepest aspects of the song's conception. The cover artwork is also excellent, and this is one of the best piano trio works in recent years, overflowing with a sense of beauty that is typical of Scandinavian and European jazz.
