● Mizuhiro Tasaki of the Classical Quartet was commissioned by an amateur cellist and Kenji fan to compose a string quartet based on the melody of Kenji Miyazawa’s “Star-Gazing.” It was premiered by an amateur string quartet at the Kenji Festival in Hanamaki in September 2013. Together with a duet for violin and cello, which was also commissioned, the work was released on CD at the request of the president of Tsubaki-Hihara Co., Ltd., a Kenji fan. ● DVD-sized hardcover digipak Includes a 16-page, full-color booklet featuring “On Kenji’s Cello” by Kenji Miyazawa scholar Taihei Sato, as well as the handwritten manuscript of “Star Journey” (held by the Kenji Miyazawa Memorial Museum). ●The illustrations on the front and back covers are works by Miki Takahashi, an artist known for her “single-stroke” drawings. Numerous illustrations are also featured within the booklet. ●In the fairy tale “The Twin Stars,” the stars sing to one another, accompanied by the silver flutes of the boys Chunse and Pouse. That song is “The Song of the Stars,” and the version in which Kenji himself set the lyrics to music and sang them has been passed down to later generations. It is one of Kenji’s most widely known compositions and continues to be sung to this day. The melody is incredibly free-spirited and joyful, yet also conveys a sense of grandeur. There is nothing more delightful than being able to connect with Kenji through music. (Mizuhiro Tasaki) ● The Variations for String Quartet is a string quartet for four string instruments, consisting of six movements. It is composed in the Classical style of Haydn and others. Kenji, who loved the cello, must surely have longed to play in a string quartet. This composition was born from that very thought. Kenji’s beloved younger sister, Toshiko, was a skilled violinist.
