Momo Kodama

Description:

Momo Kodama, the world’s leading expert on Messiaen, takes on Messiaen’s monumental masterpiece! The pinnacle of Momo Kodama’s unrivaled, overwhelming interpretation of Messiaen! Now available in a deluxe 3-CD box set! In 2008, the centennial year of Messiaen’s birth, Momo Kodama garnered attention with an ambitious project titled the “Momo Kodama Messiaen Project,” which featured five concerts showcasing Messiaen’s major works. This album represents the culmination of that endeavor. Both the performances and the project’s concept were highly acclaimed, earning her the “Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Award for New Artists” and the “Kenzo Nakajima Music Award.” It could be said that this “Messiaen Year” was made for Momo Kodama. This is “Catalogue of Birds,” the second installment following her previous album, “20 Glances at the Infant Jesus,” which has joined the ranks of classic recordings, including being selected as a “Special Selection” by Record Geijutsu magazine. Momo Kodama’s interpretations of Messiaen’s works sincerely engage with his unique worldview, bringing it to life with her beautiful touch and tone—qualities that seem almost un-Japanese. She executes the demanding technical challenges with grace, elevating these pieces—which are often dismissed as mere technical exercises—to a higher artistic plane. It becomes clear why even the premiere performer, Yvonne Loriod, recognized her artistry. Messiaen was also known as an ornithologist and collected bird songs. He gathered recordings in Japan as well, including in Karuizawa. The result of this work is the monumental piece “Catalogue d’Oiseaux.” Although 13 birds are named in the title, the songs of more than 70 species of birds are incorporated into these compositions. Although generally perceived as difficult music, one can sense Messiaen’s love for birds and his compassion for nature. If *Le Regard* is a prayer to God, then this *Catalog* expresses the wonders of nature (birds). Momo Kodama’s recording of the “Catalog,” along with “The Gaze,” will surely become a seminal album that passes Messiaen’s legacy on to future generations. It also includes a Japanese translation of Messiaen’s own writings about this work, making it an album of great historical value. [Comment provided by Octavia Records] ---
