Kazuki Yamada, a young maestro representing Japan who is making his mark on the world stage, assumed the position of Music Director of the Tokyo Mixed Chorus in April 2014. This recording captures the live concert celebrating his appointment. In 2005, at the invitation of Hiroyuki Iwaki, he became the Tokyo Mixed Choir’s Conductor-in-Residence, and the two have built a strong relationship ever since. His experience with this choir is a crucial foundation supporting Kazuki Yamada’s rich musicality. The aesthetic sensibility and balance evident in all his performances, along with the richly colored sound born of his fresh sensibility, are deeply rooted in the experiences he gained through this choir. Kazuki Yamada’s music, as heard in this live recording, incorporates many elements cultivated through his work with the choir. True to the spirit of an inaugural concert, the performances on this album overflow with joy. Of particular note is “Chōjū-giga,” a work that is a veritable burst of vitality. Featuring double bass and percussion, it is a piece rich in ethnic character. The voices overflow with a sense of song and are filled with joy and energy.
