Having extended his contract as principal conductor through 2015, Lazarev launched a new series at the end of 2011, and this album features his interpretation of Rachmaninoff. While Rachmaninoff has, of course, been a staple of Lazarev’s repertoire in his solo concerts, this marks his first recording of the composer’s works with the Japan Philharmonic. Lazarev’s sound evokes the grandeur of the Russian landscape, with deep, rich strings. He brings out the sweeping melodies, reaching the very heights of Romanticism. The result is a deeply moving and soothing, warm sound, complemented by a powerful brass section that is quintessentially Russian. While the Japan Philharmonic has traditionally excelled at so-called “Russian symphonies” such as those by Tchaikovsky, the sound captured on this recording is quintessentially Russian.
