Kazuki Yamada, Choral Conductor: A Collection of Masterpieces by Japanese Composers In 2009, Kazuki Yamada won first prize at the 51st Besançon International Conducting Competition. He has conducted orchestras in Europe, including the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and is set to make his debut with the Saito Kinen Orchestra in Japan this August. With upcoming debuts scheduled with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, his talent has gained widespread recognition in the music world in recent years; in the field of choral conducting in particular, he is highly regarded by vocalists such as Ryosuke Hatanaka. Yamada, who currently serves as Conductor-in-Residence of the Tokyo Mixed Chorus, will perform masterpieces for chorus by renowned Japanese composers alongside the chorus and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Exton recorded this rare concert live at Tokyo Opera City. From Toru Takemitsu’s a cappella works to Ikuma Dan’s “Chikugo River,” Makiko Kinoshita’s “Seagull,” and Makoto Sato’s “Song of the Earth,” each piece is a masterpiece among masterpieces. In particular, pieces such as “Ode to the Earth” from “Chikugo River” and “Song of the Earth” are familiar choral works that are invariably performed at choral competitions. In addition to the rich repertoire, the performance features the luxurious combination of orchestral accompaniment by the Tokyo Mixed Chorus and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, allowing listeners to sense Yamada’s meticulous attention to detail, born of his career and expertise as a choral conductor.
