EXTON Presents the First Installment of Its Japanese Composers Series! A dream collaboration between Orchestra Nipponica—an ensemble specializing in Japanese music—and EXTON! EXTON is launching its Japanese Composers Series. The performances will be presented by the “Akutagawa Yasushi Memorial Orchestra Nipponica,” which carries on the legacy of Japan’s leading composer, Yasushi Akutagawa, and bears his name. The orchestra has garnered significant attention for reviving many rarely heard and outstanding works by Japanese composers for modern audiences. The conductor is Tetsuji Honmyo, the orchestra’s music director. He actively promotes contemporary music from both Japan and abroad and serves as an evangelist for Japanese composers. All the works recorded here were premiered by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra in 1953. While offering glimpses of the rhythms and sounds of Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Shostakovich—reflecting the European style of the time—these works also strongly convey the ambition and passion of Japanese composers. Hikaru Hayashi’s “Symphony in G Major,” his first symphony, was commissioned by Radio Tokyo (now TBS). It is a large-scale work that includes the harp and celesta. Yuzo Toyama reportedly described the second movement as “a compact Bruckner!” Yoshiro Irino’s “Sinfonietta for Small Orchestra” features a small ensemble consisting of just one instrument of each type of wind. It was premiered by Hideo Saito. Nari Ikuno’s “Danse Concertante” features folk-inspired rhythms, revealing the influence of Ravel and Stravinsky.
