Takashi Asahina’s Bruckner Roots Revived! Symphony No. 7, 1968 Live! A 1968 performance—dating from the period when Takashi Asahina began his serious engagement with Bruckner—was discovered as a stereo master in miraculously good condition. It has been remastered using the latest DSD technology and released on CD. This performance is one of the very earliest among Asahina’s numerous recordings of Symphony No. 7; according to records, it was his third performance of the work, preceded only by two performances with the Osaka Philharmonic in 1967. It was also fortunate that the orchestra was the Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, just before its dissolution. As is well known, in June 1972, this orchestra was forced into a situation where Fuji Television and Bunka Hoso issued notices of dismissal to all its members; one-third of the musicians left to establish the New Japan Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa, while two-thirds remained with the Japan Philharmonic, established a self-governing system led by the labor union and continued their performances with the support of audiences and music lovers. As this performance was recorded before the dramatic split and dissolution took place, the quality is, as expected, exceptionally high, and it leaves a deep impression on us in many ways. Furthermore, while based on the Haas edition, this performance features an innovation not seen in Asahina’s later interpretations—the addition of percussion at the climax of the second movement (with stunning effect)—and the finale evokes an overwhelming sense of elation; it is striking how the unique approach of this particular performance speaks so eloquently to the listener.
