Description:

Dvořák: Symphony No. 9, “From the New World” Smetana: Symphonic Poem “The Moldau” Ken’ichirō Kobayashi (conductor) Japan Philharmonic Orchestra Recorded: August 20, 2000 (Dvořák) January 25–26, 2001 (Smetana) Recorded at Suntory Hall, Tokyo The world of Czech music as portrayed by Kenichiro Kobayashi!! A breathtaking, passionate live performance! In May 2002, Kenichiro Kobayashi appeared at the opening concert of the “Prague Spring” International Music Festival. As the first Asian to conduct the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Smetana’s symphonic poem cycle *My Homeland*, a performance that was a resounding success, Ken’ichirō Kobayashi has undoubtedly established himself as a figure of unshakable popularity and standing not only in Japan but also in Europe. As a testament to his connection with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, this album brings together two of the greatest Czech masterpieces—Dvořák’s “From the New World” and Smetana’s “The Moldau”—on a single disc. Both are live recordings with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. In “From the New World,” Ken-ichirō Kobayashi brings his characteristic passion to the forefront while perfectly capturing this grand symphony through the flowing strings of the fourth movement and exquisite rubato—truly showcasing the essence of his artistry, which is unlike any other performer’s. “The Moldau,” performed at a brisk, spirited tempo, is also a masterful, poetic performance that evokes nostalgia. This is the artistry of Ken’ichirō Kobayashi that left Czech audiences, critics, and even the orchestra itself in awe. Aside from the immersive live atmosphere, the meticulous sound quality—so precise it’s hard to believe this is a live recording—is another highlight.
