June McDoom, a singer-songwriter whose singles and EPs have been generating buzz, grew up in South Florida in a family of Jamaican immigrants and has released her debut album, *Follow the Light*, on Jagjaguwar. June McDoom has announced the release of her debut album, *Follow the Light*, on Jagjaguwar. This marks her first release on the label. With *Follow The Light*, JuneMcDoom set out to create music that encompasses all the sounds and emotions she loves. It is neither reggae nor dub, nor is it folk. Yet, the harmonies of these genres intertwine with a different rhythm. She and her longtime partner, Evan Wright, took their time crafting the songs by hand. Their songwriting process involves layering parts over time, pursuing texture, exercising restraint in their exploration, and intentionally crafting a minimalist sound. In the low-end, influenced by dub and the “Wall of Sound,” guitar tones with a hazy, luminous quality—reminiscent of Dionne Warwick, Minnie Riperton, Pentangle, and the Cocteau Twins’ *Victorialand*—frequently drift along the boundaries of her ever-shifting soundscape.
