Dinosaur Jr. releases *There Near*, their first new album in five years. Aiming for the guitar tones of their early days, this 13th studio album (their sixth since their reunion) is a wall of sound from start to finish. Following their previous album, *Sweep It Into Space*, and after releasing live albums and collections of previously unreleased tracks, they have now completed a masterpiece packed with new songs that will make your ears tingle. The album was produced intensively over the course of about a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst. The core trio—Murph (drums), Lou Barlow (bass/vocals), and J. Mascis (guitar/vocals)—performed nearly all the tracks, with local musician Ken Mauri adding piano and organ. J’s guitar tone is wilder than ever, thanks in part to a recently acquired 1970s Mesa Boogie MK1 amp. “I bought the same amp that Chris Dixon had when we were making our first album. The MK1 sounds like a more powerful Fender, and that’s exactly the sound I was trying to recapture,” says J. Regarding the lyrics, he adds, “When I’m writing, I’m not always sure exactly what I’m singing about. The meaning just comes to me naturally.” A masterpiece of overwhelming riffs and thunderous sound that carries on the legacy of legendary classics.
