Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Description:

"V," the fifth album by the psychedelic rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra, led by Ruban Neilson, has been released. It features 14 sun-drenched tracks inspired by West Coast AOR, yacht rock, weird pop, and Hawaiian hapa haole music. Produced between Palm Springs, California, and Hilo, Hawaii, *V* is the first double album by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the band led by Ruban Nielson—a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer of Hawaiian and New Zealand descent. The 14 sun-drenched tracks, written either solo or with his younger brother Kody, draw inspiration from West Coast AOR, yacht rock, weird pop, and Hawaiian hapa haole music. In the early days of the pandemic, Ruban reunited with Kody at a cousin’s wedding in Hawaii. With the help of their father, Chris Nielson (saxophone/flute), and longtime Unknown Mortal Orchestra member Jake Portrait, they brought all their ideas together. The result was *V*, released by Jagjaguwar. When discussing records that had moved him in the past, Ruban began thinking about the ’70s AM radio rock and ’80s pop songs that had been lurking in the back of his mind. He wanted to write his own versions of those records, which led to the two up-tempo singles released in 2021: “Weekend Run” and “That Life.” Hawaii has a musical genre known as Hapa Haole. This can be heard in “I Killed Captain Cook,” a track from *V* that is expressed in Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s signature style through a humid, guitar-driven atmosphere. Ruban, who has been influenced by Hawaiian music since the band’s debut album, has found his place within that tradition. Reflecting on his success, he realized he has both the responsibility and the platform to showcase Hapa Haole music on the global stage.
