Australian singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly has completed her new album. Her second album, *Flood*, her first in three and a half years, is set for release. Australian musician Stella Donnelly is set to release her second album, *Flood*, via Secretly Canadian. Following 2019’s *Beware of the Dogs*, *Flood* is a record of Donnelly’s rediscovery—the product of months of risky experimentation, self-reflection, and many transformations. Like the Banded Stilt featured on the album cover, Donnelly is venturing into uncharted territory, learning about herself as an artist and discovering just how rich a life she can lead as an individual. Donnelly went birdwatching in the rainforests of Beringham, Australia—one of the many cities where she lived while making the album. “I was able to lose that sense of how others react to me,” she says. “I forgot that I was a musician and could truly feel what it’s like to be a tiny, insignificant being.” By reaffirming her sense of being a tiny speck, Donnelly was able to tap into a new wellspring of creativity she didn’t even know she possessed. After leaving Beringin, she traveled across the country and wrote 43 songs. “I often wrote songs in unfamiliar places. I went to Fremantle, Williams, Gildington, Margaret River, and Melbourne, but there were times when I didn’t even know where I was. “There’s no denying that having the borders closed and losing contact with my family forced me to focus on the important parts of my life,” she reflects. Writing songs in new locations also gave rise to new approaches. Collaborating with band members Jennifer Aslett, George Foster, Jack Gaby, and Marcel Tussie sometimes felt like experimental play in kindergarten. In addition, co-producers Anna Laverty and Jake Webb (Methyl Ethyl) created a relaxed and natural atmosphere in the studio. Donnelly moved away from her usual practice of writing songs on electric guitar and turned to the piano, infusing the album with introspective fluidity and vulnerability.
