Description:

Three and a half years after her previous album catapulted her to stardom in the indie scene, Mitski has completed her long-awaited new album. Her sixth album, *Laurel Hell*, with the theme “accept everything, forgive everything,” is now out. Mitski has announced the release of her new album, *Laurel Hell*, via Dead Oceans. Mitski, who had enjoyed a cult following thanks to her previous album *Be the Cowboy* (2018—one of the most acclaimed albums of the year, named Album of the Year by Pitchfork, *New York Magazine*, and others), was propelled to stardom in the indie scene. The physical and mental toll of touring, coupled with the numerous pitfalls that came with increased fame, took a toll on both her mental state and her music. While *Be the Cowboy* was driven by a persona reflecting female strength and resistance, it ultimately amounted to the musician simply “wearing another mask.” Widespread public recognition may seem appealing on the surface, but it hides a deadly trap. “At some point, I realized that if I kept going like this, I would surely become completely numb,” she admits. “What I needed were love songs about real human relationships. I needed songs that would encourage me to forgive both others and myself. “I’m always making mistakes. I don’t want to act like a role model for others, but that doesn’t mean I’m a bad person. I needed to create a space for myself where I could sit in that gray area,” she says. Most of the songs on this album were written in 2018 or earlier, and mixing was completed in May 2021. This was the first time Mitski had spent such a long time producing an album, and it was completed right in the midst of a period of drastic global upheaval. *Laurel Hell* was recorded during lockdown with Patrick Hyland, her longtime producer. The album as a whole has evolved to be “more upbeat and dance-oriented,” and Mitski explains, “I needed to make songs that encourage people to keep going.” *** Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) ***
