It is the genre shapeshifter's most unexpected and daring work to date, as Bear takes on rap-rock, soundcloud rap, and Y2K emo head-on. The album blends two genres that influence each other like never before - anthemic pop-punk and autotune, melancholic rap - and includes the most features in Toro y Moi's album history. On the anti-love song "Madonna," Don Toliver sings moodily. Kevin Abstract and Lev provide a breathtaking reflection on "Heaven. Emo king Benjamin Gibbard also joins in on "The Heartbeat of Millennial Indie.Recorded over the course of a few months in late 2023 and early 2024, the features of "Hole Erth" came together naturally in that short period of time, with Bear simply contacting longtime friends. The sum of the parts of "Hole Erth" is enormous and demonstrates Bear's skillful ability as a producer, especially in hip-hop. His role in the culture has long been cemented by his past collaborations with some of rap's biggest pioneers; it was a bold, but not difficult, change of direction for Bear.
