Camera Obscura, the legendary Scottish indie pop band led by guitarist/vocalist Tracyanne Campbell, will release their first new album in over a decade, "Look to the East, Look to the West" on Merge Records The album will be released on Merge Records. The album is the most hard-fought of Camera Obscura's career; after the death of founding keyboardist and friend Carey Lander, in 2015, the band went on an extended hiatus. They stayed in touch, but their situation was uncertain until they were invited to the 2019 Boaty Weekender by Belle & Sebastian and announced their return with a sold-out warm-up show in Glasgow.Recorded in the same room where Queen wrote "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Look to the East, Look to the West" is a big, widescreen reimagining of the sound of Camera Obscura. Paradoxically, the band has gone back to basics. There are no strings or brass arrangements, and the emphasis is more on piano, synthesizers, Hammond organ, and drum machine. And perhaps most strikingly, the band has lifted the veil of reverb that characterized their previous work. As a result, the shades of country and soul that give their baroque pop music a bittersweet edge are more evident than ever.
