Description:

Yoshiyuki "YAO" Matsumoto, percussionist of Dachambo for 23 years, releases his solo album! Due to the stay home period caused by the Corona Vortex, he was forced to take a break from live performances and decided to take on the challenge of doing all the recording work that he had previously left to others, by himself. I finished as much as I could in the time available. For this piece, I used an African folk instrument called a balafon (a keyboard percussion instrument with a wooden soundboard that uses a gourd as a resonator). The balafon is not an off-the-shelf instrument, but rather a traditional form that he has made himself by adding his own arrangements to the base. He plays melodies mainly on the balafon, which is his life's work, and on his original instrument, which is a wooden balafon transformed into an iron instrument, and he also uses a looper and electric drums. This is an ambitious work that challenges the pursuit of new possibilities in the fusion of folk instruments (old) and the latest digital equipment (new), without fear of existing concepts or misunderstandings.
