Different Talking, the sixth and so far best album from New York indie rock foursome Frankie Cosmos, seems to exist beyond time and space. It is as if, like all of us, a collection of fragments, memories, remembered places, and reinterpreted emotions have been sublimated into a transparent resonance. This is a powerful, secular indie-rock piece of aging and the passage of time, but one that resonates vividly in today's society. Greta Kline, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Frankie Cosmos, has long been hailed as one of the most skilled and in-demand songwriters on the current indie music scene, but on Different Talking, her lyrics are somewhat mellower. The ironic cynicism that has characterized her recent work has given way to an empathy for the surprising and inevitable mistakes of the human brain and heart.Kline has been a fixture of the American indie underground since her late teens, earning the nickname "The Lauriette of New York DIY" for her prolific Bandcamp releases and 2014 debut, Zentropy. While such a title may be too heavy for the younger generation, her unparalleled influence on contemporary pop music is undeniable. The image of a young woman picking up a synthesizer in her bedroom, putting a few songs on the Internet, and instantly becoming a superstar is now commonplace, but it is a fact that Kline and her peers were (female) DIY geniuses long before they were on the mood boards of major labels' marketing departments. DIY geniuses because they have positioned and celebrated them as the norm.
