At their 55th regular concert in January 2020, the Kanagawa University Wind Ensemble presented a robust program centered on Mussorgsky’s monumental work, “Pictures at an Exhibition.” The Kanagawa University Wind Ensemble’s ability to perform this challenging piece—which demands a high level of musicality and technical skill from every section—with such confidence and power is truly breathtaking. The Tuba Concerto, featuring Yuya Tamura as soloist, is a melodious, rhythmic, and accessible work. Tamura’s virtuosic performance—which makes you forget he’s playing the tuba—is also worth noting. This album also features a special recording of their performance at the “50th Japan Band Clinic” in 2019. This live performance took place on the same stage the day after the historic performance by the U.S. Marine Band. “Gradation of the Sky Reflected on the Water’s Surface” by Suguru Haga—a masterpiece that won first prize at the Coudevan International Symphonic Wind Band Composition Competition—moved the entire audience. The composer’s sentiment—“Believing that tears falling onto the water’s surface will one day connect the world with a single gradient, just as the sky and the water’s surface blend seamlessly”—is sure to resonate with people all over the world.
