Gral Wind Orchestra
Description:
A Symphony of Overwhelming Scale and Vibrant Color The Graal Wind Orchestra has completed its first studio album. The works commissioned by the Graal Wind Orchestra and other organizations between 2007 and 2010 were later named the symphony “Graal,” consisting of four movements. Each movement is distinguished by its own distinct character, offering a sense of humor that draws the listener in, while delivering a rich and nuanced performance. Every movement vividly reflects Masamichi Amano’s unique artistic vision. The music shifts abruptly from a flood of intense sound to a beautiful, crystalline melody, all while maintaining an underlying, surging energy that runs through it all. Thanks to Seiji Sagawa’s passionate and unifying conducting and the Graal Wind Orchestra’s vibrant, majestic sound, the music resonates even more deeply with the ears and hearts of the audience. [Gral Wind Orchestra] The Gral Wind Orchestra was founded in April 1990 with 47 members, led by its current director, Konagai, and this year (2013) marks its 24th anniversary. Seiji Sagawa has served as the orchestra’s conductor since its inception. “Gral” is German for “Holy Grail”—the treasure that brings about the “miracle of bliss” in Wagner’s operas. The name was chosen with the hope that the orchestra would enjoy a future filled with good fortune. The ensemble consists of approximately 100 members, primarily working professionals, and is based in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. In addition to our annual regular concert and winter concert, we are actively involved in wind band competitions, the Kanagawa Prefecture Wind Band Festival, various events, commissioned performances, and providing instruction to local junior high schools. To date, we have hosted a total of 44 concerts, attracting a cumulative audience of approximately 45,000 people. We have also performed at events such as the “Seiji Sagawa 60th Birthday Commemorative Concert” (2010, Suntory Hall), “Yokohama Port Opening Festival: The Brass Cruise” (2012, 2009, and others; Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall), “Special Concert Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Kanagawa Prefectural Wind Ensemble Federation” (2004; Kanagawa Prefectural Hall), “21st Century Wind Ensemble ‘Resonance Banquet’” (2003, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre), and “Ueno Forest Band Park” (2002, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan). In addition, we have participated in wind ensemble competitions since 1992. By 2012, we had won the Gold Prize at the (East) Kanto Regional Competition for 17 consecutive years, and we have competed in the National Competition eight times, winning two Gold Prizes and six Silver Prizes.
