New Age Steppers

Description:

New Age Steppers", the first release on Adrian Sherwood's ON-U SOUND label and a timeless masterpiece of post-punk/UK dub! The domestic CD with 4 new tracks and a new commentary has been reissued! The CD includes a commentary by Yusuke Kawamura, author of the definitive dub disc guide, "Introduction to DUB"! New Age Steppers" is the first release from UK dub genius Adrian Sherwood's "ON-U SOUND" label. This self-titled work heralded the "coming together of heretics. Producer Adrian brought together members of pop groups The Slits, The Flying Lizards, and The Raincoats to collaborate with Style Scott of The Roots Radics, Crucial Tony of Reaction Level, George O'Byrne of Aswad, and others in a post-punk/dub fusion of intensity. The result is an intense fusion of punk and dub. Two of the album's highlights are brilliant interpretations of classic Jamaican tunes.Junior Byles' "Fade Away" and Bim Sherman's "Love Forever," with Ali Up's vocals bringing holy warnings and lovers' rock vibes to the squats of early '80s London. Elsewhere, Mark Stewart performs an early version of "Crazy Dreams and High Ideals," and music journalist Vivian Goldman's sharp voice on "Private Armies," released as the B-side to the "Launderette" single The song echoes with the Strange noises and rhythmic mists also punctuate the tracks, and the instrumental is somewhere between a late-night session at Channel One and the experimental soundscapes that "Industrial Records" was exploring at the time. This is a reissue of a classic album that created an unprecedented sound far beyond the categories of rock, punk, new wave, reggae, and dub, and is still appreciated for its innovation year after year! Both the CD and LP include a commentary by Adrian Sherwood and Shunichi Otaka on the 2003 reissue, as well as an updated commentary by Yusuke Kawamura.
