Zara Mcfarlane, a new-generation authentic jazz vocalist who made her debut on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood, has been compared to Nina Simone and Roberta Flack, and has performed alongside Grammy-winning artist Gregory Porter, has released her new album, *Songs of an Unknown Tongue*. This album pushes the boundaries of jazz and adjacent genres by exploring the ethnic and spiritual traditions of Jamaica, the homeland of her ancestors. Kwake Bass, who has contributed to works by Joe Armon-Jones and Sampha, and Wu-lu, known for his collaborations with Black Midi—both active in the South London music scene—serve as producers, creating a futuristic sound. Furthermore, the album recreates the pulsating, hypnotic rhythms of traditional Jamaican music—such as kumina and nyabinghi—as well as music performed in African-rooted rituals, using electronic sounds. The combination of these rhythms with Zara Mcfarlane’s signature crystalline vocals and vivid songwriting has resulted in an ambitious work that reaches new depths.
