Gergiev, who recently released two versions of Tchaikovsky’s ballet *Swan Lake*—one featuring only the music and the other a filmed version of the ballet—using his flagship Mariinsky Theater. It should come as no surprise that *The Nutcracker* was chosen as the follow-up to *Swan Lake*. However, please note: this recording of *The Nutcracker* is not the traditional, heartwarming version typically performed for children at Christmas, but rather a production staged “for adults.” The production was directed by world-renowned avant-garde artist Mikhail Shemyakin. His signature eye-catching costumes and striking stage design are the main draws. (This production was also presented during their run in Paris. Choreography by Kirill Simonov.) Furthermore, just as they featured Lopatkina in *Swan Lake*, the fact that this video captures the dancing of the very best dancers is truly captivating. This production features Leonid Sarafanov (Principal), a young star of the Mariinsky who is already well-known in Japan, and Irina Golub (Second Soloist), who, alongside Somore, is renowned at this theater for her striking visual presence—making it an absolute must-see for ballet fans. Needless to say, led by Sarafanov—who boasts exceptional physical ability—the quality of the dancing is in no way diminished, despite this being a non-traditional production. Furthermore, while cuts and rearrangements of the musical order are common in standard ballet performances, this release features a completely uncut version, making it a delight—and a rare treat—to savor Tchaikovsky’s score from start to finish.
