A live recording of *The Flying Dutchman* conducted by Savallish at the Bavarian State Opera was previously released on LD by EMI; however, this DVD features a different take—filmed at the same opera house but in a cinematic version with a different cast. It should be noted that Savallish considered this work his specialty—as evidenced by the fact that he conducted no fewer than 17 performances of it over a three-year span at Bayreuth (a recording from his 1959 debut at that festival has also been released). The cast on this disc is equally stellar; among them, Rigenza, who plays Senta, is renowned as an outstanding Wagnerian singer. McIntyre, who plays the title role, also appears on the DVD of *Arabella* conducted by Thielemann. Since Rigenza appears on Decca’s recording of *Elektra* conducted by Böhm and McIntyre appears on the same work conducted by Levine, we highly recommend watching those as well.
