A reissue of a classic DVD featuring a Unitel original recording that was previously available in Japan but had been out of print for some time. While DG has released DVDs of *La Traviata* featuring Solti and Georgiu (1994) and Rizzi and Netrebko (2005), this release is the film version of *La Traviata* directed by the Italian master Franco Zeffirelli. (When it was released in Japan, it was titled *La Traviata / 1985: La Traviata*.) Zeffirelli is known for creating lavish stage productions even under normal circumstances, but since this is an opera film, the production is rendered even more opulent. Teresa Stratas plays the heroine, Violetta. The air of tragic vulnerability she exudes has been highly praised since the film’s release, making it one of Stratas’s signature roles and a landmark film. Plácido Domingo was cast as her love interest, Alfredo, allowing viewers to hear the young maestro sing as he did a quarter-century ago.
