The Bobby Caldwell of the Middle East—or Stevie Wonder? HabibiFunk’s new release is Middle Eastern City Pop that shines with a surprisingly urban sound! A hidden gem of modern soul/CityPop from Jordan in the late 1980s, unearthed by HabibiFunk! Recorded in 1988–89 at a small 8-track home studio in Amman, this album contains surprising music that completely overturns the typical image of Arab music. This album is a collection of unreleased tracks by NECHAZZ, a group formed by Palestinian-Jordanian musicians Basim Saeed and Kardoon Nasser, along with Iraqi singer/guitarist Qasim Sabounchi. Although known for their live performances at the prestigious local club “Rumours,” the songs they produced remained buried over the years without ever being officially released. Discovered on cassette tapes reportedly kept by their families, these recordings can truly be called a miraculous rediscovery. While showing influences from sophisticated ’80s pop acts like Bobby Caldwell, Steely Dan, Michael Franks, George Michael, Tears for Fears, Level 42, and Stevie Wonder, yet their unique personality—which goes beyond mere imitation—shines through, as smooth R&B, jazz, and sophisticated pop, and on tracks like “LoveMeetingLove” and “OverYou,” you can fully appreciate the beautiful harmonies, synth sounds, and solid musicianship. Although all three members went on to pursue careers in completely different fields—from nightclub work to the aviation industry—the level of polish on this album is astonishing, especially considering it was created in the gaps between their daily lives. I highly recommend this album to listeners of AOR, yacht rock, city pop, modern soul, and even those following the recent resurgence of obscure grooves. This is truly a superb, time-capsule-like discovery that had been buried in the history of Middle Eastern independent music!
