The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, one of Vienna’s historic orchestras, was founded in 1900 by by Ferdinand Löwe as the Vienna Concert Association Orchestra (Wiener Concertverein Orchester). On February 11, 1903, at the Musikverein, it gave the premiere performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 under Löwe’s baton. In 1913, it established its home at the Vienna Konzerthaus; in 1919, it merged with the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra; and in 1933, it adopted its current name, which it retains to this day. Although it faced the threat of dissolution while weathering the ravages of World War II, the orchestra was revived after the war and has remained highly active, including world tours that have taken it to Japan and beyond; it enjoys a large following. The roster of its successive conductors is also impressive; the lineup of legendary figures—including Swarovski, Sawallisch, Krips, Giulini, Reinsdorf, and Rogestvensky—is truly magnificent. Although he never held the position of principal conductor, even Karajan devoted himself to the orchestra’s development as “Music Director of the Vienna Philharmonic Society.” More recently, the baton has been passed from 1982 onward through Eschenbach, Pötrer, de Burgos, and Fedoseyev, and as you know, Fabio Luisi has held the position of chief conductor since 2005, working to further expand the repertoire and enrich the orchestra’s artistic expression. Now, the orchestra has launched a new label, and as its inaugural release, we present Mahler’s (1860–1911) Symphony No. 1, a composer with whom the orchestra has deep ties. Under Luigi’s baton, this recording of Mahler’s “Youth Symphony” blends a sound rooted in the orchestra’s rich history with a contemporary interpretation. It is truly the perfect work and performance to mark the birth of this new label. A 2-LP set, reflecting the label’s commitment to sound quality, will also be released simultaneously.
