The Basel Symphony Orchestra is an orchestra based in Basel, Switzerland, and serves as the resident orchestra of the Basel Theater. It was formed in 1997 through the merger of the former Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since 2009, under Chief Conductor Dennis Russell Davies, the orchestra has sought to further expand its repertoire while pursuing perfect ensemble playing and stylish virtuosity. The former Basel Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1876, was led by Weingartner as principal conductor from 1927 to 1935 and was nurtured by a distinguished lineup of renowned conductors, including Horst Stein, Moshe Atzmon, and Armin Jordan. Countless guest conductors have led this orchestra with its unique character—from early figures such as Brahms, Mahler, and Furtwängler to more recent names like Boulez, Dutoit, and Gergiev. Dennis Russell Davies, who has served as principal conductor since 2009, has succeeded in drawing new sounds from this orchestra and has already created astonishingly innovative music in his previously released recordings of works by Schubert (1797–1828), Honegger, and Stravinsky. The Symphony No. 2 featured on this recording is an early work by Schubert, composed when he was 17 years old. However, it is a large-scale piece that is quite rewarding to listen to. Symphony No. 6, on the other hand, is also known as the “Symphony in C-sharp minor” and is considered to be heavily influenced by Beethoven, with a solemn atmosphere from the very beginning.
