The soloists—Mancini, Bisquola, Frigato, Mazzuri, and Fumagalli—form a truly stellar lineup! Surprisingly, “Judith’s Triumph” is the only surviving oratorio by the highly prolific Antonio Vivaldi. Composed in 1716 for the Pietà, a Venetian orphanage for girls with which Vivaldi maintained close ties throughout his life, the work features an all-female cast—both soloists and chorus—and is characterized by the use of unusual instruments such as the charmo, two clarinets, four theorboes, viola d’amore, and mandolin. The Ensemble Lorenzo da Ponte, led by Roberto Zarpelon, has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Concentus Musicus, the Zurich Opera House, La Scala in Milan, the Mozart Orchestra, the European Chamber Orchestra, and the Budapest Symphony Orchestra—an ensemble of outstanding musicians from Central Europe. This album features a recording of their 2016 live performance, which brought together dazzling Italian early music singers—including Mancini, Bisquola, Frigato, Mazzuri, and Fumagalli—to express their passion for melancholic and intense music.
