Choreographed by Benoit Prize-winning Shpook, "Winterreise" is Schubert's late masterpiece, a sharp portrayal of anxiety, loss, and loneliness set to music by Zender's version of "Winterreise," a series of 24 songs based on Wilhelm Müller's poetry. It is not only the pinnacle of Schubert's song cycle, but also of German Lieder. In 1993, German composer Hans Zender arranged this work for tenor and chamber orchestra. He approaches Müller's poem in his own unique way, and his interpretation reveals the emotions latent in Schubert's work. This video shows the performance of Hans Zehnder's version of "Winterreise" choreographed by Christian Spück, winner of the Benoit Prize, the highest accolade in ballet, by the Zurich Ballet in February 2021.
