Hardenberger and Nelsons' Weinberg Flying BirdsA video of a concert Andris Nelsons gave in December 2019 with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, where he has held the Kapellmeister's position since 2017. This month just happens to be Mieczyslaw Weinberg's 100th birthday, and it is noteworthy that Hardenberger performs a trumpet concerto to celebrate. Nelsons himself has been playing the trumpet since he was a boy and was even a player at his hometown opera house, so his performance was even more enthusiastic than usual. Weinberg's trumpet concerto was written in 1968 for the virtuoso trumpet player Doksitzer, and has been a favorite work of great trumpet players around the world since before Weinberg was reappraised. It is full of Weinberg's typical high voltage and enigmatic quotations, including Mendelssohn's "Wedding March," but Hardenberger's skill shines through. The prelude to Mussorgsky's opera "Khovanshchina" is not the Rimsky=Korsakov version but Shostakovich's orchestration.While the program appears to include Russian works by all three composers, it is a pleasure to be able to enjoy Shostakovich as well. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 is the conclusion of the series of three major symphonies by Nelsons and the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which includes the "Pathetique" and No. 5. The performance is full of swells and emotional intensity, and beautifully depicts Tchaikovsky's troubled inner life.
