Nelsons, the Talk of the Town at the New Year’s Concert Live footage from Leipzig, just ahead of his May 2019 Japan tour, has been released! Conductor Andris Nelsons, who appeared at this year’s Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert, is on a roll. Since taking office as the 21st Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in February 2018, his reputation has continued to soar. This video features a concert held in Leipzig in May 2019. The orchestra and Nelsons, along with guest violinist Baiba Skride, performed the same program on a tour of Japan in late May 2019, making this footage from the concert just before their arrival in Japan. Both Skride and Nelsons are from Latvia. They are longtime friends who studied at the same music school and have frequently performed Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 together. Shostakovich’s two violin concertos were written for the virtuoso Oistrakh and premiered in 1955 by Oistrakh with the Leningrad Philharmonic, conducted by Mravinsky. Although these are challenging works that demand great expressiveness and compositional skill, Skride—who has recorded them before—has them completely under control. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is part of his repertoire, which he has already recorded with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. She performed Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique,” at her inaugural concert in February 2018, presenting it at a leisurely tempo that allowed the audience to savor every detail; and since Symphony No. 5 is also one of her signature pieces, her exceptional stability and profound emotional expression were truly magnificent.
