Nelsons, the talk of the New Year's Concert, releases live video from Leipzig, just prior to his May 2019 visit to Japan! Conductor Andris Nelsons, who appeared at this year's New Year's Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, has been gaining more and more recognition since his appointment as the 21st Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in February 2018. This video shows a concert in Leipzig in May 2019. The orchestra and Nelsons are touring Japan at the end of May 2019 with their co-conductor, violist Baiba Skryde, on the same program, and this concert video is taken just before their visit to Japan. Sklide and Nelsons are both from Latvia. They are old acquaintances who studied at the same music school. The two Shostakovich violin concertos were written for the virtuoso composer Oistrakh and premiered in 1955 by Oistrakh and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mravinsky. It is a difficult piece that requires a high level of expressiveness and composition, but Sklide, who has recorded it before, has it down to a fine art.Tchaikovsky's No. 5 is a repertoire that he has already recorded with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. No. 6 "Pathetique" was also performed at the inaugural concert in February 2018, where the slow tempo made for a slow and deliberate performance, but No. 5 is also one of his favorites, and his outstanding stability and deep emotional expression are superb.
