Shai’s Mahler 5: The Result of Research That Returned to the Roots of Performance Since taking up the post of Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 2005, Riccardo Shai has achieved great success with this oldest orchestra in the world. Over a 16-year period from 1989 to 2004, Chailly completed a recording of Mahler’s complete symphonies with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, where he served as music director at the time. This video collection begins with the “Leipzig International Mahler Festival,” held at the Gewandhaus from May 17 to 29, 2011, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mahler’s death. At this festival, various orchestras and conductors took turns performing Mahler’s symphonies. As hosts, Shai and the Gewandhaus Orchestra performed Symphony No. 2 at the opening concert and Symphony No. 8 at the closing concert; the live footage of these performances became the first installment of the complete works project. Since then, they have been recording at a pace of two works per year—Symphonies No. 4 and No. 6—and this recording of Symphony No. 5 was made in February 2013. As mentioned earlier, Shai has recorded the complete set of Mahler’s symphonies with the Concertgebouw Orchestra; since the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Gewandhaus Orchestra naturally have different sounds, Shai himself was reportedly very conscious of the differences from his previous recordings. He diligently studied the scores of Walter and Mengelberg—historic conductors renowned for their mastery of Mahler—and, remaining faithful to the score, clarified his tempo choices and scrutinized the treatment of rests with great care, stating that “the length of a rest defines the intensity of the tension.” Like with Mahler, Shai has also re-recorded Brahms’ symphonies with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, applying a similar interpretation of tempo here as well. The video release is also highly appealing, featuring superb editing unique to “ACCENTUS MUSIC” that results in a visually compelling production.
