This is the late Bruckner cycle by Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin, recorded at the Berlin Philharmonie in June 2010. The series began with the release of Symphony No. 4, and this album finally marks the release of the final symphony, No. 9. Barenboim has demonstrated his brilliance as both a conductor and pianist. The year 2010 marked a joyous milestone: the 60th anniversary of his performing career. Barenboim has recorded the complete works of Bruckner twice—once with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and once with the Berlin Philharmonic—making Bruckner a composer of special significance to him. Bruckner wrote his final symphony, No. 9, up to the third movement but passed away before completing it. Nevertheless, it is a masterpiece of unparalleled beauty that gives no sense of being unfinished. Baremboim uses the original version rather than the version with the added fourth movement. This performance radiates a rich sound, dramatic intensity, and sublime beauty, reflecting Baremboim’s deep understanding of Bruckner and his respect for the performers who have brought this work to life over the years.
