Claudio Abbado passed away on January 20, 2014. In the 21st century, often described as an era without great maestros, he can truly be called the last great maestro in both name and deed. Over the past year, various labels have been releasing a steady stream of commemorative albums in his memory. ACCENTUSMUSIC released a video recording of the opening concert of the 2013 Lucerne Festival—Abad’s final appearance at the event—which generated significant buzz. This release features performances from the 2011 and 2012 Lucerne Festivals. The 2011 Lucerne Festival featured three Mozart arias and Symphony No. 35, “Haffner,” performed with Christine Schäfer. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5, performed as part of the same program, has already been released on DVD and Blu-ray, so this recording of Mozart’s works can certainly be called a long-awaited release. Incidentally, although not included here, that year’s festival was particularly memorable for Japan, as Abbado conducted the Adagio from Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 as a “Tribute to the Great East Japan Earthquake.” Symphony No. 35, “Haffner”—counted among Mozart’s six late great symphonies—is a work Abado has frequently performed with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Mozart Orchestra, and it is one of his specialties. He brings out the strings’ rich expressiveness and presents the piece at a brisk tempo. Schäfer also delivered a magnificent vocal performance. Additionally, the program featured “Egmont,” a dramatic work rarely performed in its entirety, with narration by Swiss actor Bruno Ganz and vocals by Juliane Banze. Mozart’s “Requiem,” performed on the same day, has already been released on video and features a rich, satisfying performance. This work is the incidental music for Goethe’s play of the same name. Bruno Ganz, who played Hitler in the film *The Last 12 Days of Hitler*, delivers a powerful narration that is not to be missed.
