The Hagen Quartet (founded in 1981), the undisputed top string quartet group, and Jörg Wittmann, a clarinetist, composer, and conductor who is always at the forefront of his field, have released a dream collaboration album. From the moment you hear the opening harmonies of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, you will be struck by its perfect balance and beauty. Add the heavenly lightness and color of Wittmann's clarinet, and a dreamlike world unfolds. Wittmann has performed this piece many times, and each time he plays it, he never ceases to discover new things about its beauty and color, making it a piece he cherishes very much. The performance with the Hagen Quartet, with whom he has collaborated for many years, is a world of perfect beauty. Wittmann's Clarinet Quintet was commissioned by the Hagen Quartet in 2009. At the time, Wittmann was 17 bars into the quintet when he was unable to write in front of Mozart's clarinet quintet, but he later wrote a huge quintet (adagio) that lasts about 40 minutes. Like Mozart's quintet, it has a gentle and sad dualistic atmosphere, and here we see a further deepening of the music of Wittmann, who is active at the cutting edge of contemporary music.
