Mussorgsky, Modest (1839-1881)
Description:
Two works by Mussorgsky and Schumann, this is a collection of pieces that both evoke vivid, narrative images. Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by real-life paintings. As is well known, in this one, the music depicts ten paintings by Mussorgsky's friend Hartmann, while connecting them with small pieces of music called promenades, so that the listener unwittingly makes a circuit of the hall. Schumann's "Carnival," on the other hand, is not an impression from a painting, but a story told through Schumann's sounds, with various characters, including Florestan and Eusebius, who were created by Schumann, and real people such as Chopin, Paganini, and Clara, who are combined with specific sound forms, The music is full of fantasy and is full of Schumann's dreamy and delightful music, filled with the composer's own secret episodes. When playing, pianist Gerstein pays attention to every nook and cranny down to the pedaling, carefully weaving sounds to create a new narrative, building a world that is uniquely his own.
