An anecdote related to this work... This is a tragic story that took place in 1757 near the palace of the Duke of Hiltburghausen. According to the memoirs of the violinist and composer Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, “That day, he had a premonition and chose not to ride in the horse-drawn sleigh to which he had been invited, opting instead to play a string quartet with his brothers at court; as a result of the coachman’s reckless driving, the young man sitting next to him died.” While enjoying the finest tobacco and coffee, Dittersdorf was performing this string quartet by Franz Xaver Richter (1709–1789) at court; as a result, by choosing Richter’s work, they were able to avoid a fatal outcome. Franz Xaver Richter was a master of counterpoint in Mannheim and, at the time, one of the finest composers of chamber music and symphonies. It is almost a mystery that this string quartet—so captivating it could even work miracles—had never been recorded before. We are pleased to present it here in high-quality SACD hybrid format.
