This is a significant disc that introduces the piano sonatas of Rathaus and Shostakovich, two composers who led very different lives, but whose styles have much in common. Karol Rathaus was a Jewish composer from Tarnopol, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After 1932, Rathaus fled the political crisis and moved to Paris, London, and the United States. He eventually became a professor of composition at Queens College in New York City from 1940 until his death. One of the first things Rathaus and Shostakovich had in common was an emphasis on polyphony, and the third movement of Rathaus's "Piano Sonata No. 3" contains a large-scale fugue that follows all the rules of the treatise.Comparing Rathaus's No. 3 (1927) with Shostakovich's No. 1 (1926), one will find many interesting similarities, including a strong driving force, sudden changes of mood, complex and challenging techniques, and free tonality.
