Symphonies Nos. 7, 4, 1, and 5 have already been released, and these performances—which distinguish each detail with clarity and precision while always maintaining a sense of freshness—have been the talk of the town. From the very first movement—with its large-scale, singing horn unison and the richly nuanced, delicate tones of the brass chorale that follow—this is a masterful performance that immediately leaves a lasting impression. The conductor and orchestra are perfectly in sync. The perfect musical realization of the development section—with its simple melodies, tremulous motifs, and dizzying interplay of varying tempos—is also a highlight. The beauty of the final movement is truly magnificent. The simple melody, played at a leisurely pace, rises as celestial music that contains everything necessary. The solo by Larsson—a singer who also participated in Chailly’s recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8—is beautiful and dignified, offering a vocal performance that perfectly complements Fischer’s sound design.
