Markus Becker’s Beethoven Commemorative Album! A woodwind quintet arrangement of the “Piano Concerto No. 0”! Markus Becker, the German virtuoso who made a name for himself by accomplishing the monumental feat of recording the complete piano works of Max Reger, and the Marlot Woodwind Quintet—an ensemble formed in 1986 that has won first prize in four chamber music competitions— the Marlot Woodwind Quintet—present an album commemorating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The program centers on Beethoven’s “Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 16,” an original work he composed for the “piano and woodwinds”—a combination that was rare at the time (and even today, there are relatively few works for this ensemble compared to string ensembles). A highlight is the Piano Concerto—also known as “No. 0”—written by the 13-year-old Beethoven. This album features a version arranged by Wolf-Guido Schäfer—who is not only the clarinetist of the Marlot Woodwind Quintet but also and is also known for his arrangements for various woodwind ensembles, has brilliantly arranged into a chamber concerto accompanied by a woodwind quintet. Performed by master musicians—including soloists from top-tier orchestras and professors at renowned music conservatories—this recording allows listeners to once again appreciate the genius of Beethoven, a musical master who has produced innovative works in the field of wind instruments as well.
