A collection of 20th-century French clarinet works featuring the prodigy Sergio Pirech and Kosuke Akimoto of the Aoi Trio! Sergio Pirech, a prodigious clarinetist born in 1995 who has won more than 10 awards at numerous international competitions, and Kousuke Akimoto—a member of the Aoi Trio who made history in 2018 by becoming the first Japanese musician to win the piano trio category at the prestigious ARD Munich International Music Competition—on piano, present a collection of 20th-century French clarinet works! From the 19th to the 20th century, French music established a unique position and gained widespread international recognition. The iconic composers featured on this album—such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Claude Debussy, and members of the Group of Six—contributed significantly to this success. Their aesthetic tendencies differed; for example, Saint-Saëns—who founded the “National Music Society” after France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War with the aim of promoting his country’s music—vehemently rejected the Group of Six decades later, he did agree with his younger colleagues on the need to break away from the bombastic, Wagnerian melancholy of late Romantic music. From Saint-Saëns’s sonata—written three years after Debussy’s death (a work that gives no hint that the young composers of the Group of Six were forging an entirely new musical path at the same time)— to Françaix’s light and lively variations—composed roughly 100 years after the founding of the Société Nationale de Musique—this is an excellent program that offers a panoramic view of one of the directions French music sought to take in the era following Debussy.
