Mihaëla Martin's Schubert, Sonatine Collection. By Mihaëla Martín, a Romanian violinist who has won second prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, and Elena Bashkirova, born in Moscow, the daughter of Dmitry Bashkirov, a renowned Russian pianist & teacher, who studied with her father at the Moscow Conservatory, Schubert's Sonatinae. Although Schubert himself wrote "sonata" in his autograph score, the title "sonatina" was given by Anton Diabelli after Schubert's death when he published the work, and has stuck. While the Sonatina was probably written for home performance, the "Brilliant Rondo" is a work for the concert hall and contains a surprisingly sparkling sense of humor for Schubert. Schubert's music always evokes a carriage ride in my imagination. Outside, the landscape is flowing. Cities, mountains, rivers, lakes, villages. The carriage sometimes slows down and then speeds up again, but I always have the feeling that I am traveling.
