A collection of piano works by Myaskovsky and Bakri, performed by Sabine Weier, a promising pianist from Luxembourg who studied under the renowned Belgian master Daniel Blumenthal and made her debut at Royal Albert Hall. Featuring Scriabin-esque works composed in 1912 and 1920, post-Romantic style of Nikolai Myaskovsky (1881–1950), written in 1912 and 1920, and a sonata by the French contemporary composer Nicolas Bakri (1961–), composed between 2007 and 2011. This album is a surprising testament to the strong affinity between works by these two composers, separated by nearly a century. Miaskovsky’s Piano Sonata No. 2, characterized by a somber atmosphere that includes a reference to “The Day of Wrath,” and his Piano Sonata No. 3, which eschews Romantic elements and takes on an even more bitter tone. And then there is Bakri’s Piano Sonata No. 3, *Impulsive Sonata*, inspired by Myaskovsky’s Third Sonata and dedicated to his memory. All are characterized by intense expression and a dark, breathtaking atmosphere, and they share the common feature of being written as single-movement sonatas. Tokyo M Plus
