Description:
Works for cello and wind orchestra by Goulda and Shostakovich. The album includes a cello concerto for wind orchestra by Friedrich Gulda, one of the "Three Crows of Vienna," and "Cello Suites" from various ballet, film, and jazz suites by Shostakovich. Both bring together two giants who were both excellent pianists and composers (and who also share the commonality of having heavily incorporated jazz into their compositions and musical activities). Kleinhapl's laconic cello playing is superb, as is the witty and stylish performance by the "Wiener Konzerthverein," a chamber orchestra made up of members of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (this time in a brass band configuration).
