Bruno Weil, whose series of Haydn symphonies recorded with Tafelmusik in the 1990s was highly acclaimed, undertook a new recording project of Haydn’s London Symphonies with Capella Coloniensis from 2008 to 2014. Founded in Cologne, Germany, in 1954, Capella Coloniensis is known as one of the very first orchestras to adopt performance practices based on historical sources. This album features three of the six symphonies Haydn composed during his first visit to London: No. 93, which shines with a sense of humor; No. 95, the only work in a minor key among the 12 London Symphonies; and No. 96, known affectionately as “The Miracle.” The album captivates with the unique musicality of a live performance and includes an intriguing bonus CD featuring Bruno Weil explaining the works while the orchestra performs them.
