Description:
This is a unique program that traces the works of Beethoven and his teacher through string trios. By juxtaposing the compositions of the student and his teacher, the program explores what Beethoven learned from his mentor and what he chose to discard, as inferred from the works themselves. Haydn needs no introduction, but Johann Georg Albrechtsberger was a leading figure in the musical world of his time, wielding significant influence as both a composer and educator, and he also served as the Kapellmeister at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. He was also a master of counterpoint, with students including not only Beethoven but also Hummel and Moscheles. The Dresden Philharmonic String Trio, which performs these works, consists of Janicke, concertmaster of the Dresden Philharmonic; Andreas Kuhlmann on viola; and Wolf Prehle, principal cellist.
