This is the Amaryllis Quartet’s fourth album on GENUIN. Having previously released albums featuring such unconventional pairings as Beethoven and Berg, and Haydn and Webern, the quartet once again presents a surprising pairing—Schumann and Kurtág—yet one can find an unexpected common thread in the somewhat madcap nature of the program. Kurtág’s work consists of 14 short pieces, ranging from harsh expressionism to Webern-style minimalism, offering a panoramic view of Western avant-garde music. Listening to Schumann, then to Kurtág, and then back to Schumann again triggers a strange illusion and alienation in the listener’s ears, compelling one to reflect on the dark history of the human spirit that lies beneath European history.
