Simone Young and the Hamburg State Opera’s “Ring Cycle” is finally reaching its climax. It will draw to a close with this performance of *Götterdämmerung*. The casting for Siegfried remained unchanged, with Christian Franz making full use of his resonant voice to masterfully sing through this monumental role. The role of Brünnhilde is played by veteran Deborah Polaski. With her commanding presence, she demonstrates the dignity of one of today’s finest Wagnerian sopranos. Tomlinson, another veteran, takes on the role of Hagen. He delivers a thoroughly satisfying performance as the scheming villain. Young’s conducting imbues the orchestra’s sound with a surging, undulating quality, while also showcasing rich harmonies and precise light motifs. All of it is magnificent and truly befitting the conclusion of this grand epic. Naxos Japan
